Background of the Study

IT automation refers to the use of software to create repeatable instructions and processes to replace manual labor in various IT tasks, such as data entry, system monitoring, and network management (Rathi, 2023). In the logistics industry, IT automation helps improve efficiency, reduce human error, streamline operations, and lower operational costs. Automation solutions such as warehouse management systems, automated billing systems, and route optimization algorithms are increasingly being adopted to enhance business operations in logistics firms.

Logistics firms in Sokoto State are beginning to implement IT automation to streamline their supply chain management, optimize inventory tracking, and improve customer service. However, while IT automation promises significant cost reductions, its implementation requires considerable investment in technology, training, and change management (Tukur & Sulaimon, 2024). This study will examine the effects of IT automation on cost reduction within logistics firms in Sokoto State, focusing on the challenges and benefits associated with its adoption.

Statement of the Problem

Logistics firms in Sokoto State face operational inefficiencies and high costs due to manual processes, outdated technology, and poor resource allocation. IT automation offers a potential solution to reduce operational costs and improve service delivery. However, many logistics firms have yet to fully explore the potential of automation due to high initial costs, resistance to change, and technical challenges. This study aims to evaluate the effect of IT automation on cost reduction in Sokoto State's logistics industry.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effect of IT automation on cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by logistics firms in implementing IT automation.
  3. To recommend strategies for optimizing IT automation to reduce costs in logistics firms.

Research Questions

  1. How does IT automation affect cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State?
  2. What challenges do logistics firms face when implementing IT automation to reduce costs?
  3. What strategies can logistics firms in Sokoto State adopt to maximize cost reduction through IT automation?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant relationship between the implementation of IT automation and cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State.
  2. The challenges associated with implementing IT automation do not significantly affect the cost reduction outcomes in logistics firms in Sokoto State.
  3. Strategies to optimize IT automation do not significantly improve cost reduction in logistics firms in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on logistics firms in Sokoto State and evaluates the impact of IT automation on cost reduction, covering the period from 2023 to 2025. Limitations include the potential for incomplete or biased data on automation processes and cost savings, and the variation in automation practices across different firms.

Definitions of Terms

IT Automation: The use of technology to automate repetitive tasks and processes in IT operations, improving efficiency and reducing manual labor.
Cost Reduction: The practice of lowering expenses through various methods, including process optimization, resource reallocation, and the use of technology.
Logistics Firms: Companies involved in the management and transportation of goods from suppliers to customers.
